ORANGEBURG − In Westside football’s Class AAAA state championship matchup against South Florence on Friday at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium, Rams coach Brian Lane opted for a two-point conversion to try to take the lead late in the fourth quarter.
The play came after a spectacular 50-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback and South Carolina signee Cutter Woods to Chamarryus Bomar.
Westside snapped the ball to running back Sharode Richardson, who handed off to Jameson Wilson, who attempted the pass to senior receiver Joshua Williams.
The play was reminiscent of the Philadelphia Eagles’ “Philly Special,” which helped the Eagles win Super Bowl 52 in 2018. On that play from New England’s 1-yard line, Eagles quarterback Nick Foles moved along the right side of the line as if he was shouting instructions as the ball was snapped directly to running back Corey Clement, who ran left and then lateraled to tight end Trey Burton reversing to the right. Burton then passed to Foles for a touchdown that keyed a 41-33 win.
Unfortunately for the Rams, Wilson’s pass was intercepted by Bruins cornerback Avan Rosado, leaving South Florence with the 42-41 lead with 1:52 left in the fourth, and the Bruins would go on to win the game.
Lane said he didn’t regret going for the two-point conversion.
“The plays are always there,” Lane said when asked if he’d make that same call again. “We just got to execute. At the end of the day, it’s always about execution.”

Woods complete 11 of 19 passes for 411 yards with six touchdowns. Woods and Bomar teamed for four receptions, all for touchdowns, totaling 213 receiving yards.
“I liked the call,” Woods said. “We practice that play every Thursday. But South Florence’s defense was on it. South Florence is a great team.”
This loss snaps Westside’s 27-game winning streak that began in 2023.
