Huron’s Blake Ellwein commits to South Dakota State men’s basketball program

Jul. 3—HURON — South Dakota’s top-ranked boys basketball prospect in the graduating class of 2026, per 247Sports, has chosen to stay in-state to continue his athletic career, as Huron High School star Blake Ellwein announced his commitment to the South Dakota State men’s basketball program on June 30.

Already a two-time Class AA first-team all-state performer for the Tigers entering his senior season, Ellwein is coming off a junior campaign during which he averaged 21.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. A unique talent listed as a guard despite standing 6-foot-9, Ellwein has helped guide Huron to back-to-back state tournaments, including a 16-8 record last season.

According to Ellwein’s social media, he had received Division I offers from the Summit League trio of SDSU, the University of South Dakota and North Dakota State University. Most recently, Ellwein was offered by Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, which hired former Jackrabbits head coach Eric Henderson following the 2024-25 season. He also held offers from in-state institutions Dakota Wesleyan University, Augustana University and Northern State University.

Other former South Dakota prep athletes currently on the SDSU men’s basketball roster under first-year head coach Bryan Petersen for the upcoming season include senior Matthew Mors (Yankton), junior Kalen Garry (De Smet), sophomores Joe Sayler (White River) and Damon Wilkinson (De Smet) and redshirt freshman Alec Squires (Volga).

PINE RIDGE, S.D. — The state’s No. 2-ranked prospect also revealed his collegiate intentions last month, with Pine Ridge star Marvin Richard III announcing his commitment to the University of South Dakota men’s basketball program on June 15.

Twice a first-team Class A first-team all-state selection as a rising senior, Richard paced the entire state in scoring last season, pouring in 34.7 points along with six rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.5 steals per game for the Thorpes, who had a 13-9 record. The 6-foot-1 guard established a new Class A single-game scoring record with a 62-point outing on Feb. 8.

According to Richard’s social media, he had also received offers from Northern State University and South Dakota Mines.

The Coyotes’ roster for the upcoming season features three former South Dakota prep athletes in Dakota Valley products Isaac Bruns, a junior, and Luke Bruns, a freshman, along with redshirt freshman Porter Ihnen, of Lennox.
