The Indiana Fever lost their third straight game on Friday night, which was the team’s second game playing without All-Star point guard Caitlin Clark while she recovers from a quad injury.

The 85-83 defeat to the previously winless Connecticut Sun stung Indiana head coach Stephanie White for multiple reasons. Not only did she lose to the team she coached last season, but the Fever finished the game with even less options available in the backcourt.

Fill-in point guard Sydney Colson and reserve guard Sophie Cunningham — two key ball handlers with Clark on the sidelines — both left the game with lower body injuries.

White put faith in veteran forward DeWanna Bonner and shooting guard Kelsey Mitchell, who led a furious comeback that fell short on the final shot by Mitchell.

After the game, Indiana Fever beat reporter Jacob Rude reported on X that Colson was in the locker room, but Cunningham was not.

White told reporters she had no update immediately after the game on the status of the two important reserves filling big roles while Clark remains out. Her full comments are below.

Colson’s presence with the team was a good sign, while Cunningham’s injury and ensuing locker room absence is a larger concern. She missed the first three games of the season with a sprained right ankle, which she appeared to re-injure during the loss to the Sun.

If one or both of Colson and Cunningham miss more time, it will cause rotation headaches for White, who still has to manage at least two more games without Caitlin Clark.

The Fever have three full off days for players to heal before returning to the court on Tuesday night against the Washington Mystics.
