Indiana’s Darian DeVries predicts an NBA future for Lamar Wilkerson

by

Indiana men’s basketball wouldn’t have won its past two overtime games without Lamar Wilkerson and head coach Darian DeVries seems to know it.

Wilkerson was a one-man engine for Indiana’s offense, deprived of a point guard in both overtimes at UCLA, and he drew fouls late in regulation and overtime against Wisconsin at home to earn a tie and then the win. DeVries has leaned on Wilkerson in those moments and it hasn’t led him wrong.

Asked about his star guard after the win over Wisconsin on Saturday, DeVries called him an elite player who continues to show why he’s a special talent. DeVries added that he believes there’s a future for him in the NBA.

“I think he’s one of those guys that people aren’t talking about enough because he’s going to play in that league for a long, long time,” DeVries said. “He has all the things you need, the intangibles, in addition to like, he has that one skill that everybody wants, and he can throw them in there.”

Wilkerson leads Indiana in scoring with 20.2 points per game while converting on 39.1% of his attempts from beyond the 3-point line. His scoring average is good for second in the Big Ten, just behind Northwestern forward Nick Martinelli’s 22.8 points per game.
