Insider reveals bad but expected news for Ohio State in its pursuit of an elite five-star weapon

Ohio State is one of the finish for five-star WR Monshun Sales, but the latest around his recruitment signals he’ll likely be picking another Big Ten school.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have had a strong last month on the recruiting trail with several additions, but the program looks poised to miss on the top wide receiver in the 2027 class. Five-star wideout Monshun Sales, the No. 1 receiver in the 2027 recruiting cycle according to 247Sports, will announce his college commitment on Friday, and the Buckeyes appear to be on the outside looking in.

Sales, who plays his high school football in Indiana, has Ohio State, Indiana, Alabama, and Texas as his final four schools.

According to Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong, the Indiana Hoosiers are the team to beat heading into Friday’s announcement. Wilfong’s prediction remains with Indiana, and the momentum has been trending toward the Hoosiers for some time.

Sales’ representatives still taking final offers

The recruitment isn’t completely over just yet. According to Wiltfong, representatives for Sales were still taking in final NIL and financial offers from all four schools as late as Thursday. A final commitment is expected to come on Friday.

Ohio State’s pursuit of Sales always felt like an uphill battle following the departure of former wide receivers coach Brian Hartline. Hartline had built a relationship with Sales over much of the receiver’s high school career. When Cortez Hankton came over from LSU to take over the wide receivers room in Columbus, he was tasked with reshaping that relationship on a compressed timeline.

Alabama, Texas, and Indiana were consistently the three programs most connected to Sales throughout the process, and Ohio State was never viewed as the frontrunner.

What losing Sales means for Ohio State’s 2027 class

Missing on Sales stings, but it shouldn’t be viewed as a big blow. The Buckeyes were never in the driver’s seat, and adding him always seemed like a long shot after Hartline’s departure. Still, pairing Sales with five-star Jamier Brown in the 2027 class would have given Ohio State a loaded receiver haul.

Without Sales, the Buckeyes look likely to take a two-man wide receiver class in 2027. That seems manageable given the haul Ohio State brought in at the position just a year ago in 2026, landing Brock Boyd, Chris Henry Jr., and Jerquaden Guilford.

The bigger recruitment on the immediate horizon for Ohio State is five-star David Gabriel Georges, who will announce his decision between the Buckeyes and Tennessee on July 18. That commitment would go a long way toward keeping Ohio State’s 2027 class on track.

Losing a player you wanted to another Big Ten program is never ideal, and if Sales does land with Indiana, it will mark a significant recruiting win for the Hoosiers. Time will tell whether Ohio State adds another receiver to the 2027 class or stays the course with a smaller group at the position.
