Iowa basketball is bringing in another Drake transfer. First-year Iowa head men’s basketball coach Ben McCollum announced the signing of Drake transfer forward Joey Matteoni.
The 6-foot-9, 215-pound forward redshirted during the 2024-25 season with the Drake Bulldogs. Matteoni will have four seasons of eligibility remaining.

“Joey can do a variety things. He can trigger your offense, finish and shoot. He will be a great addition to help us with our depth in the post,” McCollum said.
Matteoni was McCollum’s first high school signing at Drake. The Overland Park, Kansas, native initially signed a National Letter of Intent at Northwest Missouri State before following coach McCollum to Drake.
Matteoni was a first-team all-state honoree at Blue Valley Northwest after averaging 19.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.6 steals as a senior when he shot 64.0% from the field. A two-time first-team All-Eastern Kansas League selection, Matteoni scored 805 career points and grabbed 427 rebounds during his prep career.

Matteoni was the league’s Most Valuable Player as a senior. During his senior campaign, Matteoni registered a 28-point, 20-rebound, nine assist effort against Confluence Prep. He scored 32 points on 14-of-16 shooting against KC Central.
Matteoni helped Blue Valley Northwest to a 2023 Kansas Class 6A state championship when he averaged 16.9 points, 10.1 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.1 blocks and 1.4 steals as a junior. Matteoni was a member of the state runner-up team as a sophomore and Blue Valley Northwest advanced to the state tournament during his senior season as well.
Matteoni played club basketball for Drive5 Elite.
Matteoni joins Bennett Stirtz, Kael Combs, Cam Manyawu, Isaia Howard and Tavion Banks as the sixth former Drake Bulldog to follow McCollum to Iowa City. Those six will be joined by Robert Morris transfer Alvaro Folgueiras, Kansas State transfer Brendan Hausen, incoming freshmen Trevin Jirak and Tate Sage and Hawkeye returnee Cooper Koch.
