Iowa basketball forward named Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree

by

As the Big Ten hands out their regular-season awards prior to the 2025 TIAA Men’s Big Ten Tournament from Indianapolis, Iowa basketball sophomore forward Ladji Dembele was named an honoree for the 2025 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award Tuesday.

The Big Ten recognizes 18 Sportsmanship Award honorees each season who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These 18 student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the competition setting in order to be eligible for nomination.

With the nomination, this is Dembele’s first Big Ten honoree recipient of his two-year Hawkeyes career.

On the season, Dembele averages 4.4 points on 44.9% shooting from the field, 38.2% from beyond the arc, and 66.7% from the charity stripe. Dembele also averages 3.4 rebounds per contest and has appeared in all 31 games with 16.2 average minutes of floor time per night.

The 6-foot-8, Newark, N.J., native and the 15th-seeded Hawkeyes (16-15, 7-13 Big Ten) will begin their 2025 TIAA Big Ten Tournament journey Wednesday with a first-round clash vs. 10th-seeded Ohio State (17-14, 9-11) at approximately 5 p.m. CT from Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The game will be streamed on Peacock (subscription required) and is available on the Hawkeyes Radio Network.
