Iowa basketball lands Trey Thompson, will reclassify to 2025 class

by

With Iowa basketball in its first offseason under new head coach Ben McCollum, the Hawkeyes received a significant impact to the team’s immediate future on Saturday afternoon as 2026 four-star power forward recruit Trey Thompson announced his commitment to the Hawkeyes.

The towering 6-foot-8, 220-pound native of Greeneville, Tenn., is listed as the No. 2 prospect in the state, No. 9 power forward, and No. 59 overall recruit in the 2026 recruiting class according to 247Sports.

Adding to the excitement, Thompson will also be reclassifying to the 2025 class, making him eligible for the 2025-26 campaign.

In his three seasons on the varsity squad at Greeneville High School, Thompson has averaged 21.8 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.2 blocks per game on 56% shooting from the field, 45% from 3-point territory, and 81% from the free-throw line, per his MaxPreps profile.

Thompson chose Iowa over a list of other premier college basketball programs, which included Tennessee, Purdue, Vanderbilt, and Clemson.

The commitment is a major step in the right direction for the program, as recruits are now viewing the Hawkeyes’ program as a much more desirable destination under the new leadership and infusion of talent to the roster.
