In a final season that certainly did not pan out the way he had anticipated, Iowa basketball senior forward Payton Sandfort was named as an honorable mention selection to the All-Big Ten team by both the coaches and media, it was announced Tuesday.
It is the third honor of Sandfort’s career as he was the Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year as a sophomore and a third-team All-Big Ten selection as a junior.
Sandfort ended the regular season averaging 16.3 points on 40.0% shooting from the field and 6.3 rebounds per game, ranking second on the team in both categories. The senior also has a team-best 13 20-point games this season and ranks fourth in the conference with 74 3-point field goals made. Sandfort is shooting 32.6% from 3-point distance this season.
Sandfort has scored 505 points in the 2024-25 campaign, eclipsing the 500-point mark for a second consecutive season. Sandfort is the first Hawkeye since Luka Garza to accomplish the feat and he’s the 12th in program history to have two 500-point seasons all-time.
The Waukee, Iowa, native currently ranks 13th in the program record books with 1,572 career points and is third all-time with 261 career 3-point field goals – just two shy of passing Jeff Horner for the No. 2 spot. He is one of two players in Iowa history to have 1,500+ points, 500+ rebounds and 250+ 3-point field goals.
Sandfort is also on track to break the program’s all-time career free throw percentage record. He has made 89.5 percent (263-of-294) of his career attempts, which puts him on track to best Jordan Bohannon’s school record of 88.7 percent.
The 15th-seeded Hawkeyes (16-15, 7-13 Big Ten) open their journey in the 2025 TIAA Big Ten Tournament with a first-round clash vs. 10th-seeded Ohio State (17-14, 9-11) on Wednesday at 5 p.m. CT from Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
The game will stream on Peacock (subscription required) and is available on the airwaves through the Hawkeyes Radio Network.
