After Iowa women’s basketball’s (18-4, 9-2 Big Ten) two-game road trip to Los Angeles turned sour with back-to-back losses at USC (13-9, 5-4 Big Ten), 81-69, and No. 2 UCLA (21-1, 11-0 Big Ten), 88-65, the Hawkeyes‘ ranking in the newest USA TODAY Sports women’s basketball coaches poll took a minor hit.
Against the Trojans, the Hawkeyes’ 13 turnovers (USC converted those into 19 points) and prolonged cold stretches (nearly the entire first and third quarters) were significant factors in their eventual defeat on Jsn. 29. Meanwhile, the combination of foul trouble to both Hannah Stuelke and Ava Heiden, ice-cold perimeter shooting, and 56-26 point production disparity all were primary indicators for the team’s blowout loss against the second-ranked Bruins on Feb. 1.

As a result of the two losses, the coaches’ committee voted to drop Iowa to No. 10 in the Feb. 3 release.
In addition to Iowa, the Big Ten’s representation remains strong, with 5 other squads in the updated top 25 and 3 receiving outside votes.
In the Top 25, UCLA remains at No. 2, followed by Michigan rising to No. 7, Ohio State climbing to No. 9, Michigan State holding firm at No. 13, Maryland dropping to No. 19, and Washington slipping to No. 24. Regarding the three conference members receiving votes, Minnesota and Illinois are tied with 9 points each, while Nebraska earned 4 points.
For the Hawkeyes, the Feb. 5 rivalry clash against Minnesota (16-6, 7-4 Big Ten) from Carver-Hawkeye Arena will be their only game of the week.
