A fight between UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former UFC heavyweight champion and current PFL heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou has captivated the MMA world since Jones first moved up to the division from light heavyweight. Some argue that Jones's multifaceted skill set, including his superior grappling and varied striking approach, would allow him to neutralize Ngannou. On the other hand, others believe that Ngannou's unparalleled knockout power presents a significant threat, capable of ending the fight with a single, well-placed strike.
In a move that has reignited the prospect of this long-anticipated heavyweight clash, PFL founder Donn Davis has extended a $50 million offer to Jones to face Francis Ngannou.
Davis took to social media to propose the bout, emphasizing its significance for determining the true heavyweight champion and the top pound-for-pound fighter in mixed martial arts.
The PFL Chairman posted on X, saying, “I know one way [Jon Jones] earns $50 million… [a fight with Francis Ngannou] to decide the true MMA Heavyweight Champion and the real pound for pound no. 1. That would be THE fight of the decade for MMA fans!”
For this dream matchup between Jones and Ngannou to come to fruition, however, numerous logistical and contractual challenges would have to be addressed. Despite the lucrative offer, Jones remains under contract with the UFC, which has been reluctant to engage in collaborative events with other MMA promotions.
Additionally, UFC President Dana White has mentioned in a post-fight press conference that Jones is interested in other high-profile fights within the UFC, namely, a unifying bout between himself and interim champion Tom Aspinall.
Jones, who captured the UFC heavyweight title by defeating Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 and defended his belt against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309, will likely face Tom Aspinall as negotiations for the fight are reportedly underway.
Ngannou, who parted ways with the UFC following contractual disputes, signed with the PFL to pursue opportunities in both MMA and boxing. His departure from the UFC was marked by disputes over fighter pay, benefits, and contractual freedom.
The Cameroonian heavyweight’s venture into boxing resulted in significant paydays from matches against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. In addition, Ngannou defeated Renan Ferreira for the inaugural PFL Super Fights Heavyweight Championship back in October.
As of now, neither Jones nor Ngannou has publicly responded to Davis's $50 million offer.
