LAWRENCE — Kansas basketball is without star guard Darryn Peterson for Tuesday’s non-conference home game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
As No. 24 Jayhawks (1-1) players warmed up pregame, ahead of the 7 p.m. (CT)-scheduled tip-off inside Allen Fieldhouse, Peterson could be seen at times on the court — but wearing street clothes. Without the standout freshman, KU is without both one of its starters and one of the best players college basketball has to offer. It shouldn’t matter much who starts in Peterson’s place in this matchup, as Kansas is heavily favored, but if his absence lingers on to future games it becomes more of an issue.

Peterson was limited during the second half of a preseason exhibition game on the road against Louisville, before missing the second preseason exhibition game at home against Fort Hays State. He then played in the regular season opener at home against Green Bay, when he was limited in the second half there, too, as cramping issues remained a problem. Although coach Bill Self said Peterson made it through the road loss at now-No. 20 UNC in recent days pretty well, Self allowed late in that game Peterson was taken out due to precautionary reasons.
After Tuesday’s game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-2), Kansas doesn’t play again until Saturday at home against Princeton. Following that, is a game next week in the Champions Classic in New York City against No. 4 Duke. So far this season, Peterson is averaging 21.5 points per game in two starts.
Kansas basketball guard Darryn Peterson (22) comes out during a timeout during the first half of an exhibition against Fort Hays State inside Allen Fieldhouse on Oct. 28, 2025.
