Kawhi Leonard’s future with the Clippers is increasingly uncertain after the team reportedly declined to offer the veteran forward a long-term commitment, leading to serious trade discussions with the Raptors.
Leonard is entering the final year of his contract, worth $50.3 million, and reports indicate he would only consider signing an extension with Toronto if he is traded by Los Angeles.
The Pistons and Warriors had also previously shown interest in acquiring the two-time Finals MVP.
A return to Toronto would reunite Leonard with the franchise he led to the 2019 NBA championship.
He is coming off an outstanding season, averaging 27.9 points in 65 games while earning All-NBA Second Team honors and finishing seventh in MVP voting.
The reported talks represent a notable shift after Clippers president Lawrence Frank said in April, “Our plan is to win with Kawhi,” adding that the organization hoped to continue building around him if both sides remained aligned.
If a trade is completed, Leonard would immediately become eligible to sign a two-year, $123.7 million extension with Toronto.
Meanwhile, the Clippers have also been linked to potential trade discussions involving Celtics star Jaylen Brown.
