Kelsey Mitchell breaks one of Caitlin Clark’s Fever franchise records

by

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell broke the franchise’s single-season scoring record Tuesday against the Seattle Storm. A 24-foot 3-point jumper with 7:27 left in the first quarter gave Mitchell 772 points on the season.

Mitchell surpassed guard Caitlin Clark, who held the previous record with 769 points scored in her rookie campaign last year. Mitchell scored 767 points in 2024.

The seven-year WNBA veteran has carried the Fever amid an injury-plagued season. Clark missed her 15th straight game Tuesday with a right groin injury. Guards Sydney Colson (foot) and Aari McDonald (ACL) suffered season-ending injuries in an Aug. 7 loss at Phoenix.

Guard Sophie Cunningham had surgery Friday to fix a torn MCL that will sideline her for the rest of the season. Forward Chloe Bibby also missed Tuesday’s contest with a left knee injury.

In Friday’s loss to the Minnesota Lynx, Fever players wore “MVP Mitchell” T-shirts, supporting Mitchell’s case for MVP this season. The Ohio State alum is third in the league in scoring with 20.7 points per game.

“Kelsey has been carrying us. You look at the numbers, and her numbers have been incredible all season long,” coach Stephanie White said Friday. “When we’ve needed her most, she stepped up and has been even better. There’s a lot of great MVP candidates out there, but Kelsey Mitchell should certainly be in the conversation.”
