The USA’s Kevin Polish broke the compound men’s open continental qualifying record on Friday, scoring 707 points at the Venustiano Carranza Stadium in Morelia – three more than the previous Americas mark set by Matt Stutzman at the 2019 World Archery Para Championships in Den Bosch.
His total was 20 points clear of second-placed Daniel Comeau of Canada.
Currently ranked third in the world, Polish is now the top seed and favourite in the competition at the first-ever para archery World Cup leg held in the Americas.
The three-time Paralympian won gold in this category at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games.
The continental qualifying record in the W1 women’s category also fell on Friday, as Colombia’s Angie Alejandra Alarcon Moreno shot 615 to lead a field of two. She surpassed the previous Americas best held by the USA’s Lisa Coryell.
Mexico’s Samuel Molina topped recurve men’s open qualifying with 638 points – the highest result for the host nation on the board. The world number five is also the reigning Para Pan American Champion and a multi-time senior continental title holder.
Competition in Morelia continues on Saturday with individual eliminations.
Delayed coverage of the finals will be available from Sunday with a subscription to archery+. The footage is expected to be available no later than seven days after the event.
