The Lady Vols won their first game against UConn since 2007.

No. 17 Tennessee (17-5, 4-5 SEC) defeated No. 5 UConn (21-3, 12-0 Big East), 80-76, on Thursday at Food City Center. Rankings reflect the USA TODAY Sports women’s basketball coaches poll.

Thursday’s contest was the first for Kim Caldwell in the Tennessee-UConn series. Caldwell is in her first season as the Lady Vols’ head coach.

She recapped Tennessee’s performance after the game.

“I was really proud of our team,” Caldwell said. “That’s a level of play that I knew we could achieve. We just had failed to achieve it, and so it was really good to get that win tonight. It was good to get a close win. I think our crowd was phenomenal. They were worth 10 to 15 points easily, and so I appreciate everyone that came out and cheered.”
