Kylie Masse Rips Canadian Record in 50 Back in TYR PSS Prelims
Good morning, Fort Lauderdale. Kylie Masse wasted little time at the TYR Pro Swim Series Thursday, firing off a Canadian record in the women’s 50 backstroke in the morning heats.
Masse went 27.13 to take the top time in prelims. That trims .05 seconds off her national record of 27.18, set at Canadian Trials in British Columbia in April 2022.
It also nearly downs the U.S. Open record that Katharine Berkoff set at 27.12 in 2022. The American record and Americas record is held by Regan Smith at 27.12.
The swim ties Berkoff’s 2023 swim for the 13th fastest time in history. It moves Masse up to the eighth-fastest performer of all-time.
Masse is the 2022 World Champion in this event. She went 27.31 to edge Berkoff to that title, with times of 27.22 and 27.26 in Budapest. The 29-year-old went 27.42 at the TYR Pro Swim Series stop in Westmont in March. She last seriously scared her 50 back record at the Trofeu Internacional Ciutat de Barcelona last March, going 27.24.
All of those heads of backstroking state were present Thursday morning. Berkoff finished second in 27.34. Smith was third in 27.10. Fellow Olympians Claire Curzan and Rhyan White were fourth and fifth, respectively.
