UCLA football hosted a coaching clinic during spring practices that more than 100 local high school football coaches attended. One of those coaches was Whittier High School coach and former Garfield High School coach Lorenzo Hernandez.

After watching the Bruins’ practices, Hernandez said he was impressed by how new UCLA head coach Bob Chesney ran practices. Hernandez called UCLA “the place to be”.

“Just being out there at practice, there was an immediate impact that you can feel,” Hernandez said, per 247Sports. “The positive vibes were oozing out there and I thought this is really the place to be right now. It just really, really caught my attention. And I was just in awe to tell you the truth. I was very, very impressed.”

Hernandez explained how everything Chesney and the rest of UCLA’s coaching staff does during practice is intentional.

One thing that stood out to Hernandez was how offensive coordinator Dean Kennedy had quarterbacks doing mental reps behind the quarterback running the drill rather than standing on the sidelines. Hernandez said he plans to implement that into his practices at Whittier going forward.

“We always talk about mental reps, and the UCLA coaches literally have a quarterback standing a few yards behind the other quarterback and just taking mental reps,” Hernandez said, per 247Sports. “So that way if the starter makes a mistake, they can easily go to the backup and say what did he do wrong? It’s beyond a mental rep, and it’s so simple. At Garfield, we would have our backup guy on the sideline previously. We’re going to change that.”

Hernandez compared Chesney to ChatGPT, explaining how Chesney is so knowledgable about football.

“Chesney is like the Chat GPT of football…Everything they do is done intentionally. The players may not always understand that, but the coaches know,” Hernandez said, per 247Sports.
