Smiles were plastered all around for Sequoyah fans and players after the first round of the State Tournament.
The Lady Indians basketball team picked up its first win at the “Big House” since 2018 with a 49-45 win over the Anadarko Warriors Thursday, March 13. The Lady Indians led by as much as 10 at one point, but the Lady Warriors made it a one-possession game with time running out.
“That was the first win since 2018; it feels good to bring it back to Sequoyah,” SHS freshman Brenly Lamb said.
Lamb stepped up in those final minutes to deliver a dagger to the heart of Anadarko’s fans.
With Lady Indians leading by just 2 points, SHS surged down the court and quickly put up a shot. The first shot clanked off the rim, leading to a swarm of players fighting for the rebound, with the Lady Indians walking away with another shot.
The Lady Indians shot three times and collected the rebound three times before Lamb knocked down a 3-pointer with defenders in her face to extend the lead to 5.
“That’s not a shot you want. At the time, I was thinking it’s layup or nothing right there, but she’s just a gamer,;she hits the big shots,” SHS coach Justin Brown said. “It’s one of those where you go, ‘No, don’t shoot that until it goes in.’”
The shot pulled the air out of AHS’ fan section, allowing the Lady Indians to run out the time and secure the first-round win.
Throughout the season, the Lady Indians used their depth to pick up wins, and the State Tournament isn’t any different. Seven players picked up at least 3 points for the Lady Indians.
Brenly Lamb’s 13 points led the way for SHS, while juniors Prairie Holmes and Macy Brown both picked up 9 points.
SHS’ depth is important to their scoring but also their defensive presence. Throughout the 32 minutes, SHS is going to press as much as possible and a lot of bodies are needed for that.
“Our depth gives people problems; that is what we have to rely on,” Brown said. “You can’t play full-court man and not sub. Having eight to 10 players deep is huge.”
