Lady Vols suffer first loss in SEC play to Mississippi State

No. 15 Tennessee (14-4, 6-1 SEC) suffered its first loss in Southeastern Conference basketball play on Thursday. Mississippi State (16-6, 3-5 SEC) defeated the Lady Vols, 77-62, at Food City Center.

Thursday’s loss ended Tennessee’s seven-game win streak.

Talaysia Cooper led the Lady Vols in scoring with 19 points. She converted 9-of-24 field goal attempts and 1-of-5 three-point attempts. Cooper also recorded four rebounds, four assists and one steal.

Janiah Barker led Tennessee in rebounds with six.

Tennessee leads the all-time women’s basketball series, 42-9, against Mississippi State, dating to Feb. 22, 1986. Mississippi State’s first win against the Lady Vols was on Jan. 28, 2016.

Thursday marked the second contest between the Lady Vols and Bulldogs this season. Tennessee won at Mississippi State, 90-80, on Jan. 8.

Tennessee will next play on Feb. 1 at No. 1 UConn. Tipoff is slated for noon EST and will be televised by Fox.
