Layne Riggs becomes NSS’ first second-generation winner behind last-lap pass

by

GLADEVILLE — Scott Riggs won Nashville Superspeedway’s first Truck Series race, in 2001.

A quarter century later, Riggs watched his son, Layne, start the Allegiance 200 on the pole, lead every lap of the first two stages, fall to 13th early in the third, overtake the defending race champion on the final lap and take the checkered flag in a race delayed by rain and ending after midnight Saturday.

Scott Riggs eventually won three guitars between the Truck and the then-Busch Series in the track’s original decade of the 2000s. Layne, whose bedroom doubled as his dad’s trophy room (including the Gibson guitars), was born a year after that inaugural race on the Wilson-Rutherford County line.

Layne Riggs said he plans to put his guitar next to his dad’s three after becoming the track’s first second-generation winner.

“It’s pretty cool; it’s awesome,” the younger Riggs said. “I had to grow up with his trophy cases — with his guitars — in our basement. I had to look at them all my life. Now, I got my own. I usually take all my trophies home to my place in Charlotte (N.C.). I’m going to take this one and put it next to his.

“It was a track that was good for him and he had a lot of speed. I feel like it kind of goes with my driving style, too.”

“A lot of the same characteristics are still at this racetrack, the original pavement on the track. Not a whole lot has changed. Some of the tips, advice that he’s given me, things to focus on … that’s all the same…25 years later.”

After a nearly three-hour delay due to a persistent light rain, the drivers finally fired up their engines and Riggs led the 36-truck field onto the 1.3-mile D-oval.

They kept on following him for the first two stages, including a “silent” lap on Lap 8 in memory of the late Kyle Busch.

Riggs won Stage 1 through 45 laps by 2.267 seconds over Kaden Honeycutt.

After an uneventful Stage 1, Stage 2 began with a rash of cautions but ended the way the first one did, with Riggs leading over Honeycutt.

But Honeycutt’s crew won the pit stop and got him out first while Riggs fell all the way back to 10th. Worse, a bad set of tires threatened to wreck the race (figuratively) for Riggs.

Also, teams that had pitted during the final wreck caution during Stage 2 stayed on the track during the “intermission” and some of them moved to the top of the leaderboard, led by Ross Chastain, as Stage 3 began on Lap 104.

Rajah Caruth, last year’s winner, passed Chastain for the lead on Lap 105.

Honeycutt was running third and was attempting to pass Chastain for second when he suddenly lost power due to an electrical issue on Lap 118, forcing a caution when his truck completely died short of the opening of pit road. He returned to the track but finished three laps down in 27th place.

Chastain jumped into the lead on the restart on Lap 134. But Caruth was back in first place a lap later.

Meanwhile, Riggs’ crew had replaced the dud tires and the new ones rocketed him up the field after having fallen to 13th place. He picked off the drivers one by one, shoving Andres Perez De Lara aside from behind. The last one was Caruth, whom he passed on the 150th, and final, lap as he took the checkered flag at 12:06 a.m. Saturday, becoming the first second-generation winner in NSS history.

“I don’t know what was wrong with those tires we put on to start the final stage,” Riggs said. “I swore they put the left rear on the right rear and the right rear on the left rear. It was absolutely undriveable. Held onto it and didn’t wreck it, it was that bad.

“Thankfully, the caution came out just at the right time for us. Had nothing to lose so we came down pit road, put on four on and got my race truck back.”

Lebanon’s Dawson Sutton, coming off a dominant win the night before in the Battle of Broadway 150 at Nashville’s Fairgrounds Speedway, started 23rd and finished 27th.
