LeBron James has considered the Philadelphia 76ers as a potential destination in free agency, but concerns about Joel Embiid’s long-term health and availability could complicate a possible partnership, according to Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson.

Robinson reported that James has serious questions about whether Embiid can remain healthy enough to support a championship push, with sources indicating that the pairing between the two stars is a major unresolved issue in Philadelphia’s pursuit of James.

Embiid has been one of the NBA’s most dominant players when available, but durability has remained a major storyline throughout his career. The seven-time All-Star has played 490 games across 10 NBA seasons, missing his first two full seasons after being selected third overall in the 2014 NBA Draft because of foot injuries.

The 2025-26 season marked another inconsistent year physically for Embiid, as he appeared in 38 games and averaged 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists while shooting 48.9% from the field. Those numbers followed a 2024-25 season in which he played only 19 games and averaged 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists.

Embiid’s availability has declined since his MVP season in 2022-23, when he averaged 33.1 points, 10.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 66 games and won his first MVP award. Since then, he has played 96 total regular-season games over the next three seasons combined.

Philadelphia’s front office has already explored options for its long-term future beyond Embiid, according to Robinson, including scouting young frontcourt prospects such as Chris Cenac before the 2026 NBA Draft. The 76ers selected Labaron Philon Jr. with the No. 22 pick after trading their original selection, while Cenac was drafted 27th overall by the Boston Celtics.

Newly appointed president of basketball operations Mike Gansey is reportedly leading Philadelphia’s decision-making process. Gansey’s longstanding relationship with James dates back to their high school days in Ohio, where Gansey finished behind James in the 2001 Ohio Mr. Basketball voting.

Philadelphia has built a roster designed to compete immediately around Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown. The 76ers added Brown during the offseason and finished the 2025-26 regular season with a 45-37 record before reaching the Eastern Conference semifinals, where they were swept by the eventual champion New York Knicks.

The fit between James and Embiid would also present a stylistic challenge. James has thrived in fast-paced systems built around transition opportunities, playmaking and spacing, while Embiid’s offensive impact comes primarily through half-court scoring, post play and isolation possessions.

At age 41, James remains one of the league’s most productive players. He averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds in 60 games during the 2025-26 season while helping the Los Angeles Lakers win the Pacific Division with a 53-29 record.

Philadelphia is one of several teams linked to James, alongside the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat. The Warriors remain involved in negotiations despite finishing 37-45 and missing the playoffs, while Cleveland reached the Eastern Conference finals after a 52-30 regular season and Miami reshaped its roster by acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis.

If Philadelphia wants to maximize its chances of signing James, the franchise may have to evaluate whether Embiid and James can realistically share a championship window. The decision could determine whether the 76ers continue building around their current stars or consider a major roster shift before the 2026-27 season.
