LeBron James’ move to the Philadelphia 76ers could come with an unusual challenge if reports about his living situation prove accurate, via Fred Katz of The Athletic.
According to multiple reports, James may choose to live in New York City instead of the Philadelphia area and commute roughly 100 miles to the 76ers’ arena or practice facility in nearby Camden, New Jersey.
A helicopter flight could reduce the trip to about 45 minutes, though James has not publicly confirmed those plans and a league source said no final decision has been made.
The arrangement would not be unprecedented. JJ Redick lived in Brooklyn while playing for Philadelphia, and Wilt Chamberlain also resided in New York during part of his legendary 76ers career.
However, helicopter travel in the Northeast presents unique obstacles. Flights can be delayed or canceled because of fog, poor visibility, strong winds, thunderstorms, snowstorms or icing conditions.
Weather disruptions are far more common in the New York-to-Philadelphia corridor than in Southern California, where players such as Kobe Bryant and Kawhi Leonard regularly commuted by helicopter.
If flying isn’t possible, James would likely face a lengthy drive along Interstate 95, one of the busiest highways in the country, potentially complicating his game-day routine.
While the estimated cost of helicopter travel is insignificant for James, who has earned hundreds of millions during his NBA career, the logistics of commuting could become another storyline during his first season with the 76ers.
