Stewart began the 11th season of her remarkable WNBA career, her fourth with the Liberty. She shines as one of the best players in the league, having led New York to the championship in 2024.
However, the second game of the 2026 campaign brought frustration towards Stewart’s Liberty and the Mystics. Both teams combined for 58 total fouls, 31 from New York and 27 from Washington. The Liberty had two people foul out of the game and two were close to doing the same, Stewart being in the latter category.
Stewart reflected on the results after the game, per reporter Myles Ehrlich. She was not happy the officiating, noting how it ruins any chance for either team to gain momentum as the game went on for longer than it should have.
“It disrupts everyone’s flow, both sides of the game. This game was 2:41, that’s insane. We said it last game. I know it’s gonna take time, figuring out what’s gonna be called, and then there’s no flow. So I still don’t know,” Stewart said.

How Breanna Stewart, Liberty played against Mystics
Breanna Stewart certainly did not expect the game between the Liberty and the Mystics to last nearly three hours. To see that many fouls in any game would be uncomfortable for teams to go through.
Despite the many fouls, both teams traded blows as they needed overtime to decide the winner. New York ended up prevailing by outscoring Washington 13-8 in those five extra minutes.
Four players scored in double-digit for New York in the win, including Stewart. She led the team with 23 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks. Marine Johannes shined with 25 points and two steals, Pauline Astier came next with 18 points and seven assists, while Jonquel Jones provided 13 points and eight rebounds.
