The New York Liberty star told reporters in Phoenix on Wednesday that she will re-sign with the only WNBA team for which she has ever played.
“Obviously I’m where I’m supposed to be,” Ionescu said at USA Basketball training camp. “Never thought anything different, and so excited to be able to sign and get started. It’s coming up really quickly, so excited to get all this behind us and just be able to start our season and get going in New York.”

On April 9, Ionescu will become an unrestricted free agent, eligible to sign with any team.

But hours after her teammate Breanna Stewart announced her intention to stay home in New York, Ionescu — a Walnut Creek, California native who enjoyed a decorated college career at Oregon — has confirmed her plan to sign a new maximum contract with the Liberty.
That may dent any plans the Golden State Valkyries or the expansion Portland Fire had to make a huge move by luring Ionescu back across the country.
Ionescu is a four-time WNBA All-Star who has averaged at least 17 points per game in each of the past three seasons. She helped the Liberty win their first-ever WNBA title in 2024 and is a career 35 percent shooter from 3-point range.
