LOCAL ROUNDUP: Wheatmore beats archrival Trinity

TRINITY – A strong start sparked Wheatmore past archrival Trinity 52-42 in PAC 1A/2A basketball Tuesday night at Wheatmore.

Parker Kines scored 20 points to lead the Warriors (4-5 overall, 1-1 conference), who led 27-11 at halftime. Finley Bryant added 14 points and five assists, followed by Truman Auman with 10 points.

Caleb Coggins chipped in nine rebounds while Weston Driggers had five blocks as Wheatmore ended a nine-game skid against the Bulldogs going to 2020-21.

Nazir Staton scored 18 points while Zy’iveon Holmes had 16 points for Trinity (3-7, 0-2), which trimmed into its deficit in the second half but couldn’t overcome the slow start.

In the girls game, Wheatmore rolled to a 51-24 victory. The Warriors improved to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while the Bulldogs dipped to 6-4 and 0-2.

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, SOUTHERN GUILFORD

SUMNER – Southwest Guilford topped Southern Guilford 75-63 in nonconference boys basketball Tuesday at Southern.

The Cowboys improved to 3-3 while the Storm dipped to 1-8.

In the girls game, Southwest won 49-29. The Cowgirls improved to 5-1 while the Storm moved to 1-8.

EAST DAVIDSON, NORTH DAVIDSON

THOMASVILLE – East Davidson lost 53-22 against county rival North Davidson in nonconference boys basketball Tuesday at East.

The Golden Eagles dropped to 1-7.

In the girls game, North edged East 38-32. The Golden Eagles moved to 0-7.

LEDFORD, WEST DAVIDSON

WALLBURG – Ledford rolled to a 70-44 win over West Davidson in nonconference boys basketball Tuesday at Ledford. The Panthers stayed undefeated at 8-0.

In the girls game, Ledford won 57-29 to also stay undefeated at 8-0. Izzy Smith had 14 points while Addie Robertson added 12 points.

HOT SANTA INVITATIONAL

WINSTON-SALEM – T.W. Andrews posted 16 top-10 finishes to highlight the H.O.T. Santa Invitational indoor track meet Tuesday at JDL Fast Track.

Valerie Gainey (second – 55 dash, 7.48; third – 300 dash, 43.90), Mariah Hoy (fourth – 55 dash, 7.52; seventh – 300 dash, 44.99), Jamya Brand (sixth – 500 dash, 1:34.00), La’Ajaeae Peate (seventh – shot put, 20-6.25), Rayniyah Pittman (eighth – shot put, 19-9) and Brooklyn Pearson (10th – shot put, 19-1), plus the 4×200 (fifth, 1:55.26) and 4×400 (fifth, 4:44.28) relays were in the top 10 on the girls side.

Jedidiah Abakah (ninth – 300 dash, 38.93; 10th – 55 hurdles, 9.50), Lilen Ratley (first – 500 dash, 1:08.76) and Chandler Isaac (fourth – shot put, 36-6), plus the 4×400 (first, 3:37.51) and 4×200 (sixth, 1:44.92) relays.

HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TOPPLES UCF

ORLANDO – High Point University took down Central Florida 64-60 in nonconference women’s basketball Tuesday at UCF’s Addition Financial Arena.

The win is the first for the Panthers under coach Chelsea Banbury against a Power Four conference (UCF is in the Big 12).

Nevaeh Zavala, last week’s Big South player of the week, scored 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting to lead High Point (5-7). Nakyah Terrell, who had four assists, and Jaleesa Lawrence, who had four rebounds, each added 11 points, while Aaliyah Collins had 10 points.

Dom Nesland chipped in six rebounds and four assists as the Panthers led 22-17 at the end of the first. The teams were tied midway through the second before High Point scored 14 straight to help build a 41-28 lead into halftime.

The Panthers led by as much as 17 late in the third before UCF (7-3), which was led by Khyala Ngodu with 22 points, got within one with 3:02 left in the game. But Collins made a free throw and a layup to push the lead back out.

High Point will host Austin Peay State on Saturday at 2 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL RACES PAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY

HIGH POINT – High Point University rolled past Carolina University 99-31 in nonconference men’s basketball Tuesday in the Qubein Center.

Abdoulaye Thiam scored 13 points to lead the Panthers (11-2), who led 53-20 at halftime before continuing to push their advantage past 60 in the second half. Chase Johnston and Kimani Hamilton each had 11.

Terry Anderson and Ivan Matlekovic each chipped in nine points as 16 players scored for High Point, which shot 63% in the first half and 54% in the second half for a 59% average for the game.

Josh Ibukunoluwa led with 11 points while Anderson had six assists.

Cameron Buchanan scored six points to lead Carolina (0-3), which shot 27%.

The Panthers play again Saturday at Southern Illinois.
