Louisville women’s basketball downs Stanford, stays perfect in ACC play

by

Louisville women’s basketball has shown it can win games in different ways during its current winning streak.

The seventh-ranked Cardinals have multiple scoring threats, good ball movement, a stifling defense and the ability to hang on to large leads. They combined all four of those elements to down Stanford, 84-66, on Thursday night.

UofL (20-3, 10-0 ACC) now has its 13th straight win and 16th straight 20-win season while matching its best start to ACC play. Prior to this season, the squad has only gone 10-0 in conference action twice since joining the league.

Despite the 18-point victory and shooting 47.2% from the field, head coach Jeff Walz wasn’t satisfied with his team’s overall offensive performance.

“We’ve got five players in double figures, but it’s misleading because we stood a lot,” he said. “We were very passive. We didn’t move the ball the way we have. So it’s something that we have to watch some film and, hopefully, get better because we’re going to have to be better at the offensive end on Sunday.”

Mackenly Randolph was the star of the first half, going 3-for-3 from 3-point range over the first two quarters before finishing with a career-high 14 points. Then Laura Ziegler took over in the second half and notched her fourth double-double of 2025-26 with a season-high 22 points to go along with 11 rebounds. After scoring eight points in the first half, she scored eight points within a three-minute span in the third quarter for a 59-46 Louisville lead.

Louisville opened the game capitalizing on Stanford’s mistakes. After the first half, the Cardinal had more turnovers (14) than field goals (13). Seven of those turnovers came from steals by Louisville with the squad scoring 16 points off the miscues.

Stanford made a run in the second half before Ziegler shut the door on the potential comeback bid.

“This was a game where the matchup is perfect for her, where they’ve got a big post trying to guard her,” Walz said of Ziegler. “She’s able to shoot the ball and she’s able to put it on the floor and go by. And then she’s got a really nice face-up game where she’s able to score it from 15 feet. It makes it really tough for people to try to guard her.”

The biggest scare for Louisville was Imari Berry appearing to have rolled her ankle while deflecting a pass at the 3:37 mark of the fourth quarter. It wasn’t immediately clear what the severity of the injury was, and with the Cardinals up by 20 points at that time, she didn’t return to the game. The sophomore ended the game with four points, four rebounds and three steals.

After the game, Walz said Berry sprained her ankle but “the good thing is she’s got two of them.”

Louisville’s West Coast trip continues with a 2 p.m. game against California on Sunday.

“I keep saying, if we can figure out one night where everybody just plays good, golly, it could be really fun to watch because we do have so many people that can score the basketball,” Walz said. “… I’m proud of them though. We’re going to have a big one on Sunday.”
