LSU basketball head coach Matt McMahon set to return next season

by

LSU basketball won’t be making a change at head coach. According to a report from On3’s Shea Dixon, Matt McMahon will return next season. In year three, McMahon is 13-12 with a 2-10 conference record.

LSU took a step back this year after showing progress in 2023-24. LSU finished 2024 with a 17-16 record, going 9-9 in conference play.

McMahon took over a program in turmoil as LSU was under an NCAA investigation for recruiting violations that led to LSU parting ways with previous head coach Will Wade. As several SEC teams have emerged as national title contenders in recent years, LSU is yet to find its footing.

Firing McMahon would only bring more volatility to a program that’s seen enough of it. Instead, LSU is giving McMahon a vote of confidence along with increased resources.

On3’s report states that LSU basketball’s NIL budget is among the lowest in the SEC. LSU is aiming to change that this offseason.

It doesn’t take that many players to turn around a roster. With more money on the table, LSU believes McMahon can lead a quick turnaround.

LSU will be back in action when faces South Carolina in the PMAC on Tuesday.
