BATON ROUGE – One of Kim Mulkey’s top assistant coaches is taking the next step in his career.
LSU women’s basketball assistant coach Gary Redus II is set to become the next head women’s basketball at Rutgers, sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to The Daily Advertiser late Sunday night. Redus has worked with Mulkey at LSU for the past four seasons, earning a well-known reputation for his recruiting prowess as well as was a integral part in the team winning the national championship in 2023.

Rutgers University President William Tate and new athletics director Keli Zinn both previously worked at LSU with Tate in the same role and Zinn serving as LSU athletics’ chief operating officer. Both have established relationships with Redus.
Tate was a diligent supporter of LSU women’s basketball while he was the university’s president and had a front row seat to how Redus coached and recruited.

Rutgers fired former coach Coquese Washigton last week and have quickly her replacement in Redus, who will be getting his first experience as a head coach. USA TODAY reported Sunday that current Rhode Island head coach Tammi Reiss was also a target for the vacant position.
Before LSU, Redus coached with the WNBA’s Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White at Vanderbilt and was named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s 30 under 30 list during his time in Nashville.
Mulkey will now have an assistant coaching position to fill this offseason for the first time in a couple of years. The last hire she made was in 2024 when she brought in LSU women’s basketball legend Seimone Augustus in an assistant role to replace Johnny Derrick, who retired after the 2023-24 campaign.
