As Lucy Olsen begins her professional career with the Washington Mystics later this month, the former Hawkeyes point guard gave a unique behind-the-scenes look at her Mother’s Day surprise.
Olsen, who frequently shares how she prepares for her day and her journey as a newcomer to the WNBA, posted a video on her social media platforms showing her driving a few hours from the Washington, D.C., area back to her hometown of Collegeville, Penn., to surprise her mother for Mother’s Day.

In the video, she detailed her stop at Wawa (a gas station/convenience store located primarily on the East Coast), updates while sitting in traffic, and activities while waiting to surprise her mother. The video ended with her mother’s heartwarming reaction to the surprise appearance.

Olsen, a third-round selection by the Washington Mystics in the 2025 WNBA draft, has had a bit of a rough showing in her two preseason games by finishing with 2.0 points, 1.0 rebound, and 1.0 assist on 2-of-14 shooting. Despite the poor shooting, the Mystics are giving Olsen a fair look as she has accrued 36 minutes of action across both preseason games.
While the Mystics have a May 15 deadline to trim their roster by four players before their regular season opener on May 16 vs. the Atlanta Dream, Olsen is in competition with fellow teammates Zaay Green and Ashten Prechtel for the “final spot or two,” according to The Washington Post’s Kareem Copeland.

The Mystics’ May 16 season opener against Atlanta, which will be played at CareFirst Arena in Washington, D.C., will begin at 6:30 p.m. CT on ION and WBNA League Pass.
