Luka Mijatovic Claims League Titles in ‘Off’ Events as High School Postseason Begins

A rising star on the distance-freestyle scene, 16-year-old Luka Mijatovic contested some “off” events during the East Bay Athletic League Championships over the weekend. A multi-event National Age Group record-holder, Mijatovic captured titles at the EBAL Champs in the 100-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke, with both events producing personal-best times, according to the USA Swimming database.

In the 100 freestyle, Mijatovic clocked a time of 43.65, which handed him a victory of more than two seconds. Representing Foothill High School, Mijatovic was out in 20.93 and came home in 22.72. He also claimed first place in the 100 breaststroke behind a time of 55.46. The USA Swimming database listed Mijatovic’s previous best times as 44.38 in the 100 freestyle and 56.97 in the 100 breaststroke.

Mijatovic will next contest the North Coast Section Meet, which is scheduled for May 9-10. The state championships will be held the following weekend, with Mijatovic the reigning titlist in the 500 freestyle. Earlier this year, Mijatovic posted a personal best of 4:10.96 in the 500 free, an NAG record for the 15-16 classification.

Meanwhile, at the Trinity League Championships, Teagan O’Dell posted a swim of 1:42.98 in the 200 freestyle, and added a victory in the 100 butterfly in 52.17. A former Swimming World High School Swimmer of the Year, the Cal-bound O’Dell will compete in the upcoming Southern Section Champs in California. O’Dell is entered in that meet in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke. She is the high school record holder in the 200 IM.
