Luka Mijatovic Destroys NAG Record (17-18) in 400 Freestyle
It didn’t take long for Luka Mijatovic to alter the National Age Group (NAG) records in the 17-18 classification, as he established a new standard on Friday night. Less than a month after turning 17, Mijatovic recorded a mark of 3:45.20 in the 400-meter freestyle on the third night of the TYR Pro Series stop in Sacramento. That performance easily bettered the former record of 3:46.01, posted by Ryan Erisman during the 2025 season.
Mijatovic lowered his personal best in the event by a tenth, as he went 3:45.30 last year for an NAG in the 15-16 classification. In his latest record, Mijatovic split 53.39 at the 100-meter mark, went through the midpoint of the race in 1:50.61 and made the turn at 300 meters in 2:48.77. He came home in a split of 56.43. Earlier in the meet, Mijatovic broke the 15-minute barrier in the 1500 freestyle for the first time in his fledgling career.
A member of the American squad at last summer’s World Championships in Singapore, Mijatovic did not get the chance to put his talent on display at the international level, as he was one of several athletes severely hampered by a stomach illness. However, based on his Mijatovic looks in May, the teenager appears headed for a big summer. The Californian is expected to race at Nationals, then for Team USA at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships.
