The seventh edition of the Madeira Island Ultra Swim (MIUS) is ready to kick off in the Atlantic shores of the Porto Santo in the Madeira Archipelago.
The Madeira Island Ultra Swim is one of the most prestigious open-water swimming events in the Atlantic. It combines elite sport with the unique natural setting of the island of Porto Santo. Now in its seventh year, the event brings together federated and non-federated athletes from Portugal and around the world, competing across a total of five distance on May 23-24.
Porto Santo is a small island situated around 45 km north-east of Madeira with 9KM unbroken golden sandy beach, one of the longest in the Atlantic.
Organized by the Associação de Natação da Madeira (ANM) and the Federação Portuguesa de Natação (FPN), the event expects approximately 400 athletes from Portugal and around the world. International registrations already confirmed include athletes from Argentina, Brazil, Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine, Russia, Austria, Peru, Italy, China and Angola.

Among the participants will be Cláudia Fraga, an open-water swimmer, president of the Gynaecological Oncology Movement (MOG) and ambassador for the event, whose presence reinforces the link between sport, health and quality of life.
Races span 10 km, 7.5K, 5K, 3K and 1.5K, open to all swimmers aged 12 and older, federated and non-federated alike, with free registration across all distances.
“Porto Santo is a unique setting for open-water swimming. The clarity and temperature of its waters, the length of the beach and the quality of the facilities create exceptional conditions for an event of this scale,” the organization said in a news release.
The MIUS forms part of the Portuguese Open and the National Open Water Championships, bringing together more than 400 athletes from 17 countries, which confirms its growing international profile.
