TYR Summer Championships, Day Four Finals: Madi Mintenko Pops Another Career Best for 200 Freestyle Title

Call it a do-or-die night at the TYR Summer Championships.

The four-day meet in Southern California will come to a conclusion on Friday night, but not before a handful of athletes work toward organizing their schedule for the Summer of 2026. The TYR Champs serve as one of the selection competitions for next year’s Pan Pacific Championships, and several swimmers will try to produce times at the William Woollett Aquatic Center that will grant them participation.

Alex Shackell is currently on the qualification fence in the 100-meter butterfly and 200 butterfly, and will contest the 200 fly at the TYR meet with the hopes of going faster than 2:05.80. Meanwhile, Hunter Armstrong will chase a performance quicker than 24.44 in the 50 backstroke, and should be carrying confidence after flashing 21.76 career-best speed earlier in the meet in the 50 freestyle.

The Friday night schedule will open with the women’s 800 freestyle and follow with women’s and men’s action in the 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 50 backstroke. The men’s 1500 freestyle will also be raced.

Here’s an event-by-event recap of the Day Four finals:

Backing up her win in the 1500 freestyle from the opening night of the meet, Australian Tiana Kritzinger withstood late challenges from countrywoman Molly Walker and Gena Jorgenson to win the 800 freestyle. Kritzinger hit the wall in 8:32.98, with Walker going 8:34.04. Walker closed in 29.54 over the final 50 meters, enabling her to move ahead of Jorgenson.

Women’s 200 Freestyle

A fist pump at the finish revealed the satisfaction of 17-year-old Madi Mintenko in the 200 freestyle. Headed for the University of Virginia, Mintenko followed up her personal best in prelims with another career best in the final, clocking 1:56.95. Mintenko was out slightly slower at night, turning at the midway point in 57.16, but she had more in reserve for the finish to go sub-1:57 for the first time.

Mintenko, whose time is sixth-best by an American during the Pan Pacs qualification period, was pressed down the stretch by Australian Jaimie De Lutiis. De Lutiis, who secured second place behind a swim of 1:57.28, was comfortably ahead of the 1:58.92 from Justin Kozan.
