The pressure is mounting for Hubert Davis and the North Carolina Tar Heels basketball team. After leading the Tar Heels to the NCAA Tournament title game in his first season, the program has taken a step backward.

Despite back-to-back tournament appearances, last season’s 23-14 record and a first-round exit left fans frustrated and disappointed.
Now, Davis and his staff are working tirelessly to improve the roster for the 2025-26 season, and they appear to have major financial backing in doing so.
Earlier this week, Inside Carolina published a report that stunned the college basketball world and left many UNC fans in disbelief.
“North Carolina has provided its basketball program with a massive influx of financial support this offseason.”
Fans on X reacted to the news.
“They overpaid,” one tweeted.
“On what planet is this roster worth $14M,” another tweeted.

“And this is the result LOL,” a fan tweeted.
“THIS HAS TO FAKE NEWS LMAOOOOOOO,” another tweeted.

According to Greg Barnes of 247Sports, multiple sources confirmed that UNC has surpassed $14 million in financial commitment for its 2025-26 basketball roster. That figure is nearly triple what was spent just a year ago.
The report outlined the purpose of the increase:
“The investment into the program removes any lingering obstacles, perceived or otherwise, that have limited consistent success in this evolving intercollegiate landscape consisting of NIL, revenue share and the transfer portal.”

North Carolina remains one of college basketball’s most storied programs. The Tar Heels have won six national championships, with the most recent coming in 2017. They’ve reached the Final Four 21 times, most recently in 2022.
For next season, Davis brought in Jarin Stevenson from Alabama and will have Henri Veesaar returning to the roster. But the addition of Jim Tanner to the staff to help with player acquisitions has drawn mixed reviews so far.
Whether this $14 million investment leads to success or sparks more fan backlash remains to be seen. One thing is certain: there will be no shortage of pressure on Hubert Davis this season in Chapel Hill.
