Kansas basketball legend Mario Chalmers is returning to competitive action with the Jayhawks, this time as part of JHX Hoops in The Basketball Tournament.

Chalmers joins a Kansas alumni roster preparing to face Kansas State alumni team Purple Reign in a best-of-three series beginning Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Bramlage Coliseum. Game 2 will be played Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Lee Arena, with a third game, if necessary, scheduled for Friday at 8 p.m. in Manhattan.
The addition gives JHX Hoops another accomplished guard in a backcourt that also features former Jayhawks Frank Mason III, Marcus Garrett and Zeke Mayo.
Chalmers remains one of the most recognizable players in Kansas basketball history after helping lead the Jayhawks to the 2008 national championship. His game-tying 3-pointer against Memphis in the national title game forced overtime, where Kansas eventually secured its first championship since 1988.
After three seasons at KU, Chalmers began a 15-year professional career that included 473 NBA starts and championships with the Miami Heat in 2012 and 2013. More recently, Chalmers has competed in the Big3, where he hit a game-winning 3-pointer in last year’s championship.

JHX Hoops will be coached by another familiar name in former Kansas guard Sherron Collins, while Tyshawn Taylor and Stephanie Temple serve as team managers. Taylor is also listed on the roster.
While the team’s frontcourt could present questions, its collection of guards provides considerable experience and defensive versatility. Garrett was the 2020 national defensive player of the year, Mason was the 2017 national player of the year and Mayo recently completed his first professional season.
Now, Chalmers adds championship experience to a roster preparing for another chapter in the Kansas-Kansas State rivalry, with former Jayhawks and Wildcats meeting for in-state bragging rights and an opportunity to advance in TBT.
