Mark Daigneault reacts to Thunder’s Game 1 win over Suns

The Oklahoma City Thunder opened their Western Conference first-round series with a 119-84 win over the Phoenix Suns on Sunday, controlling Game 1 from start to finish at Paycom Center. Head coach Mark Daigneault highlighted defense, execution, and discipline as the foundation of the performance.

Daigneault emphasized Oklahoma City’s paint protection and overall defensive structure after limiting Phoenix’s interior scoring opportunities.

“Yeah, I mean they’re a good jump shooting team, so I would expect them to make more of the open ones as we go through the series. I didn’t think they shot it great tonight relative to how they normally do, but I did think we were on it. We took a lot of the easy stuff away, made them earn everything, and when you do that, you give yourself a chance to have a night like tonight where the jump shots don’t go in because they’re over contested. So I thought generally we were pretty good.”

He also pointed to the Thunder’s offensive discipline against Phoenix pressure, noting how execution shaped the game flow.

“Yeah, I thought we were good execution. Good force inside of the actions, good pace in an opportunistic way, but not reckless. And just executed in the half court, got ourselves advantages, made the right plays. I thought the unselfishness tonight really popped. And so we just bet on good shots. And played pretty well on that end as well.”

A key second-quarter lineup shift also helped extend the lead, with Daigneault praising the group’s impact on both ends.

“Yeah, those guys were great. They went in there, extended the lead. I thought JWill’s first half minutes were particularly impactful, especially on the glass. The rebounding, this is the best crashing team in the league. They don’t get the most offensive rebounds, but they go more than anybody.”

He continued by stressing rebounding discipline and second-chance prevention as a deciding factor early.

“I thought at the end of the first half that reared its head a little bit. They got on the glass, they got extra possessions. I think they had 14 second chance points at halftime. But prior to that, JWill really patrolled it with the defensive rebounding down there.”

Daigneault also highlighted defensive discipline at the point of attack against Phoenix’s perimeter scorers and stressed the need for consistent execution.

“You got to be really good at the point of attack and then good in the help and then good flying out of it. So we did that on enough possessions tonight, but like I said, I would expect them to shoot it better on some of the open ones.”

He added that emotional control and competitiveness were key as Phoenix attempted early aggression.

“We’re competitive. It’s emotional in the playoffs. Everybody wants to win. You just got to make sure you channel that in the right direction. And I thought we did a nice job there.”

The Thunder now turn their attention to Game 2 on Wednesday, with Daigneault stressing that the series is still in its early stages despite the strong opening statement.
