Marquette vs. St. John’s: Starters, injury updates and prediction for Big East semifinal

by

NEW YORK – The Marquette men’s basketball team is trying to reach its third straight Big East championship game.

But the fifth-seeded Golden Eagles (23-9) face a tough task on Friday night in the semifinals against top-seeded St. John’s (28-4) at Madison Square Garden.

The Red Storm has won both meetings this season, including one at Madison Square Garden in February and an overtime thriller at Fiserv Forum last Saturday.

Will Deivon Smith play for St. John’s?

St. John’s guard Deivon Smith has been bothered by a right shoulder injury since mid-January.

The 5-foot-11 Smith has been in and out of lineup, and he sat out the Red Storm’s win in Milwaukee. But he returned to play 11 minutes in the Big East quarterfinals on Thursday, and should be available against MU.

Marquette vs St. John’s prediction

This is where MU thrives under Smart, with a nobody-believes-in-us angle to play with his team.

The Golden Eagles will be able to hang with the Red Storm, but the raucous environment will be too much to overcome.

Expect another classic, with the Red Storm earning a slight edge.

Prediction: St. John’s 78, Marquette 75
