Matt Lubick ready to coach against Colorado State with Nevada after cancer battle

Matt Lubick, pictured while coaching at Oregon, is now the Nevada offensive coordinator. He will face the Rams this weekend, just over a year after being diagnosed with leukemia.

Matt Lubick’s first day of chemotherapy saw him walk more than 51,000 steps as he completed the 26.2 miles of a marathon in a hospital hallway.

Lubick was diagnosed with leukemia just over a year ago in early October of 2023.

He had run the Boston Marathon the prior April but was diagnosed after a doctor visit revealed a low white blood cell count.

That led to the start of chemotherapy and doing the walking marathon while attached to an IV.

A little more than a year later, Lubick, the son of legendary Colorado State football coach Sonny Lubick, will coach against the Rams this weekend.

Matt Lubick is the offensive coordinator under new coach Jeff Choate and has helped transform the Wolf Pack and QB Brendon Lewis into a dangerous attack.

CSU and Nevada play at 6 p.m. Mountain time Saturday, Nov. 2. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.

Lubick’s ongoing battle was documented last week with a feature on Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff show.

“I really believe this is the best story in college football this year because it’s authentic. It’s real,” Choate said on Fox.

“What Matt’s done is really impressive. Done a great job with that offense. I know he’s going through some health issues. Just shows the credit and character that he has,” CSU coach Jay Norvell said this week.

“I got a chance to spend some time with Matt when we first got here. I’ve known of his reputation as a coach. He’s a very, very bright guy and has done a great job. He’s been through a tough stretch but he’s come through it and done a fantastic job this year. I’m happy for his success and I hope it continues.”

Matt Lubick played quarterback at Fort Collins High School and defensive back at Western Montana College before following his father’s footsteps into coaching.

He worked as a graduate assistant on his dad’s staff at CSU in 1995 and again as a receivers coach from 2001-04. Lubick has spent time as an offensive coordinator at Nebraska, Washington and Oregon. He’s also coached at Duke, Arizona State, Ole Miss, Oregon State, San Jose State and Cal State Northridge in addition to CSU.

“The one thing this has taught me is every day is a gift,” Lubick said on Fox.
