Back-to-Back: The Medalists from Paris Olympics Who Returned to World Champs Podium (Women’s Edition)
At last year’s Olympic Games in Paris, 42 medals were distributed across 14 individual events. Of the athletes who earned those pieces of hardware, many competed at this summer’s World Championships in Singapore. However, several medalists did not compete for a variety of reasons (retirement, rest, injury), while the United States’ Kate Douglass embraced a different schedule, replacing the 200 individual medley with the 100 breaststroke.
When calculating the numbers between Paris and Singapore, 45.23 percent (19-for-42) of the women’s medalists from the Olympics returned to the podium in the same event. Mollie O’Callaghan (200 freestyle), Katie Ledecky (800 freestyle/1500 freestyle), Kaylee McKeown (100 backstroke/200 backstroke), Kate Douglass (200 breaststroke) and Summer McIntosh (200 butterfly/200 IM/400 IM) were the swimmers who followed an Olympic crown with a world title.
