Mets, Yankees among ‘most aggressive suitors’ for White Sox LHP Garrett Crochet: report

by

The Mets and Yankees already duked it out over superstar outfielder Juan Soto in free agency this offseason, and it appears the crosstown rivals could be going head-to-head again — but this time in the trade market.

While numerous teams are in the mix, both New York clubs are said to be among the “most aggressive suitors” in a trade for Chicago White Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet as of Monday, according to Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic.

The Phillies, Red Sox, and Orioles are also among the interested teams in acquiring the lefty.

While no deal is considered close at this time, Rosenthal notes that the Mets would appear to have the edge in the sweepstakes due to the surplus of young talent they could offer, and the White Sox looking for big-league-ready hitters in exchange.

With Chicago’s farm system lacking up-the-middle talent, youngsters such as Luisangel Acuna, Jett Williams, Drew Gilbert, Brett Baty, and Ronny Mauricio could potentially be of interest.

Crochet certainly would cost the Mets a pretty penny in any deal, but adding a young and controllable talent — under team control for the next two seasons — would certainly be an excellent way for David Stearns to round out a starting rotation that’s still missing the top-of-the-line arm needed.

For the Yankees, Crochet could help make up for the loss of Soto by joining a star-studded trio alongside ace Gerrit Cole and lefty Carlos Rodon.

The 25-year-old transitioned to the rotation for the first time last season and he put together a terrific All-Star showing, pitching to a 3.58 ERA and 1.06 WHIP while striking out 209 batters and walking just 33 across a career-high 146 innings.

With all of the interest, it’s becoming increasingly likely that Crochet will be dealt during this week’s MLB Winter Meetings.
