With the NFL’s offseason in full swing and the various meetings that take place with the league, including the NFL’s Competition Committee’s meetings, I asked the following question last evening:
If you had the power to make a new rule, get rid of a rule, or change/adjust a rule in the NFL, what would it be and why?
Below are some of your thoughts and answers-

Jsutton15 just wants the same clarification as the rest of us.
I would like to know exactly what is pass interference
coach k 13 would like to see the playoff seeding changed to make more sense.
I would like to see the playoff seeding changed to go by records and not division winners, I don’t think it’s fair a 9-8 division winners to have better seeding then a team that has a record of like 13-4 but did not when there division.
SlayerNation1 wants the NFL to change the rules to make field goals a challenge again.
Whatever is necessary to make kicking a small part of the game again. Narrow the goal posts if needed.
The game has become a glorified soccer player skills
competition.
Not exactly a rule change:
Contraction – there are too many teams in relation to suitable QB talent, certainly for QB1 and even QB2
For many reasons, the NFL is really becoming unwatchable as NBA,MLB for the first time. Gambling, NIL brats, the kickoff, kickers in general, analytics, podcasts, hokey pregame shows, international games, multiple subscriptions to consume the product, etc.
Francesco ITA agrees with getting rid of the tush push, along with other plays of the kind. Also wants the ties between the NFL and legal sports betting dissolved.
Get rid of assisting (pushing or pulling) the ball carrier.
and removing any kind of link between betting agencies and NFL, NFL teams and football related sites.
MIAMI235 wants the kickoffs to go back to the way they have been forever.
Go back to the old kickoffs.
CluelessNFLfan wants to adjust the rules on what constitutes a legal lineup in an effort to reduce the annoying penalties tied to a variety of issues.
Changes that would cut down on a lot of penalties. Offensive formation must be C with 2 Gs and 2 Ts on either side. They are never eligible receivers, but all other players are. Then no one would have to report as eligible (the Lions would love this) because they already are. The other is all these illegal formation penalties. No more of this having to cover up the T stuff. Receivers not in motion just need to be within a yard, maybe 2 of the LOS.
MiamiItaliano just wants to get rid of the stupidity of ties in the NFL.
Get rid of ties. I think it’s the only sport besides European football (I prefer that than calling it soccer) that can end in a tie. Put in the college football overtime rules during at least the regular season. It will make it more fun. They can keep the playoff overtime rules if they want, but I think it won’t be necessary.
SpfldDan has a small list of good ideas.
1. Get rid of all “plane” rules, especially the “plane of the goal line” rule. My rule for a TD: the ball is past the goal line and some part of your body (foot, elbow, etc.) is down in the endzone. Much less subjectivity and time taken to make the call.
2. Add a one-foot stripe along the boundary to allow a player who inadvertantly steps out to still be eligible as long as they re-establish them selves before any contact with the ball or an opposing player.
3. Allow coaches to challenge ANY play or penalty. Same number of challenges, but everything should be challengable. Holds refs more accountable for horrible missed or “phantom” calls.
Phoenix6, like me, hates the idea of overseas games, and I would add that the idea of future teams based overseas is even worse IMO.
I’m adding, “overseas games.”
Get r id of that crap right now.
It’s American Football, not world football.
Other countries want to see? Come on down to the USA.
Because it’s a disrespect to the paying (ticket) fans here. Especially the home team fans.
Phoenix6 also has a list of retro ideas he would like implemented.
— Bring back the tackling (hits) of the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s.
— Bring back full contact practices.
— Eliminate the “tuck” rule (hasn’t been called since Tom Lady).
— Allow hits on QB’s including pancakes.
— Lastly, bring back the original kick-offs!
Thus bringing back toughness (and entertainment) to American Football again.
Bringing back reasonable scores too, instead of 30, 40 pts a game.
28pts & under is enough.
Left Shark would like to see the NFL be more like this site, no politics!
Start with getting the political messaging off the field. Football is supposed to be entertainment.
go_canes, whose screen name I strongly endorse, wants the Tush Push to go the way of the Dodo bird.
Get rid of assisting (pushing or pulling) the ball carrier.
I Hate Sports says it’s all rigged anyway!
All sports are rigged. So who cares. Vegas always wins; not the Raiders.
Well, those are our comments for this evening. We had a lot of solid ideas, which I hope the league will eventually get around to instituting in some form or another. It would be nice if we, as fans, the ones that drive this entire ship that is the NFL financially, actually had real say in how this thing operated. I guess there are always boycotts or other forms of financial arm-twisting, but we all know this would never happen to any degree that would actually affect things enough to get the owners’ attention. As always, thank you to each and every one of you who come to these posts on a nightly or daily basis and participate in our question of the day post.
