New Portland Trail Blazers head coach Micah Nori is determined to help Scoot Henderson unlock his full potential as the young guard prepares to play under his third head coach in less than a year.
In an interview with Sean Highkin of The Rose Garden Report, Nori explained that one of his top priorities is putting Henderson in situations where he can take advantage of his greatest strengths.
The former No. 3 overall pick has shown flashes of his talent since entering the league in 2023, but he has yet to develop into the star many projected him to become.
According to Nori, creating the right offensive environment will be key to Henderson’s success.
“We’ve got to make sure we create space for him,” Nori said. “The thing he can do is attack the paint and get downhill and go where he wants to go. What we have to do is have good spacing, make sure the corners are filled and then we have outlets for him to get to the paint, and if he can’t finish, then the kick-outs are right there for him where he can see. He can go where he wants, and that’s a huge thing in this game.
“After that, it’s helping him with his decision-making and pace. Not slowing him down, but making sure that with the speed he plays with, it’s controlled and he can see exactly what he needs as the defense tells him what to do.”
Henderson’s path to major minutes could become more complicated after Portland added Ja Morant to a backcourt that already features veterans Jrue Holiday and Damian Lillard. Even so, Nori believes the 22-year-old can thrive without always serving as the primary ball-handler.
The new coach said having several experienced playmakers on the floor together should benefit the entire offense because of their willingness to move the ball and make unselfish decisions.
“The big thing that’s exciting to be about this group is, they’re all willing passers,” Nori added. “We don’t have guys that are selfish or are just coming down looking for themselves. They’re all looking to make the right play. So I have no problem thinking all these guys are going to be able to play together because they’re willing to pass the ball to each other to make the right play.”
