It was a banner year for Tom Izzo and his Michigan State Spartans basketball team.
The Spartans won the Big Ten regular season title, advanced to the Big Ten Tournament championship game, and reached the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.

It was the first time since the 2019-20 season that the Spartans claimed the Big Ten conference title, and the first time since 2017-18 that they won it outright. Their trip to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight was also their first since 2019.
Despite the program’s success and consistent excellence in East Lansing, the Spartans are not immune to the impact of the transfer portal.
Jim Comparoni of On3 Sports posted early Sunday morning the following news: “Michigan State guard Gehrig Normand transfers to Santa Clara”.
Normand arrived in East Lansing from Birdville High School in North Richland Hills, Texas. During his senior season in high school, he averaged 19 points, six rebounds, and five assists per game.

When he committed to the Spartans, he was a four-star recruit and ranked 83rd overall by On3 Sports.

Normand saw limited action for the Big Ten champions, appearing in just 13 games and averaging only two minutes per contest.
His final appearance as a Spartan came in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Bryant, where he logged two minutes of playing time.
The latest development in the transfer portal for Michigan State is the addition of shooting guard Trey Fort. He played at Samford last season and will be entering his sixth year of college basketball.
Fort’s arrival should help offset the departures of Jase Richardson, Tre Holloman, Jaden Akins, Frankie Fidler, and Szymon Zapala. Another key addition for Tom Izzo is Kaleb Glenn, who comes to East Lansing from Florida Atlantic.
