Michigan State Spartans football head coach Pat Fitzgerald and the entire Michigan State staff have been working overtime—and it’s paying dividends.
The latest piece to the Spartans’ ever-growing puzzle is defensive lineman Ohimai Ozolua. A four-star recruit with a 0.8911 composite rating, Ozolua is ranked as the 49th defensive lineman in the 2027 class, the 408th overall player nationally, and the 15th-best recruit out of Illinois.

Ozolua stands at a towering 6’5” and already has solid size, weighing in at 245 pounds. While that’s not the finished product by any means, it’s more than a strong starting point for a young high school prospect who will continue to develop physically. He currently plays at St. Rita of Cascia High School in Chicago, Illinois.
Interestingly, 247Sports lists Ozolua as a high three-star prospect, giving him an 89 overall rating—just shy of four-star status on their scale. Still, across the major recruiting platforms, he carries four-star recognition and strong national attention.
This marks the Spartans’ sixth commitment in the 2027 class. Ozolua is currently tied with offensive tackle Jack Carlson as the highest-rated commit in the class heading to East Lansing.

The Spartans haven’t skipped a beat in recruiting despite the coaching change at the top—and across much of the staff. If anything, they’ve picked up the pace, placing a clear emphasis on building a young core that can reshape the mentality around Michigan State football.
This commitment is a significant win for Fitzgerald and new defensive line coach Winston DeLattiboudere. His return to the college level after coaching in the NFL could prove to be a major advantage on the recruiting trail. Michigan State wasn’t alone in pursuing Ozolua. Landing a commitment over that level of competition speaks volumes about the direction of the program and the weight the Spartan brand still carries.
Michigan State is clearly digging its heels in on winning in the trenches. The staff is putting a major emphasis on building from the inside out, focusing on both the offensive and defensive lines. Controlling the line of scrimmage gives a team the best chance to dictate the pace and outcome of a game. Lose that battle, and you lose control.

Adding a big, young defensive lineman who is already climbing national recruiting boards is a major win for DeLattiboudere, Fitzgerald, and the entire Spartan program—from the locker room to the fan base.
