The Michigan State women’s basketball team had its comeback efforts come up just short while suffering an 85-80 setback to Nebraska on Wednesday night.

The No. 21-ranked Spartans, who trailed by as much as 17 in the late stages of the third quarter, got as close as four in the final quarter before falling in the Big Ten matchup at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Julia Ayrault finished with 21 points and nine rebounds before fouling out to lead MSU, which dropped to 12-3 and 2-2 in the Big Ten. Theryn Hallock added 18 points and Grace VanSlooten had 12 points and six rebounds off the bench before fouling out for the Spartans, who dropped to 0-7 in road games against Nebraska.

Alexis Markowski had a game-high 28 points and eight rebounds to lead Nebraska, which won its second straight since a three-game losing streak that featured losses to top-10 teams UCLA and USC.

The Spartans were plagued by a rough second quarter where they were outscored by the Huskers, 28-12. MSU entered the quarter with a 21-15 advantage but that was erased when Nebraska (12-4, 3-2) went on a 15-0 run. The Huskers held the Spartans without a field goal for six minutes during their big quarter.

MSU returns home Sunday for a 2 p.m. matchup against Washington.
