“I am honored and excited to lead Mississippi Valley State’s men’s basketball program,” said Davis in a statement. “This is a proud program with a strong tradition, and I look forward to building a culture of discipline, toughness, and success. Our goal is to compete for championships and represent this university with pride.”

Delta Devils Athletic Director Dr. Alecia Shields-Gadson said in a statement, “We are excited to welcome Coach Davis to Mississippi Valley State University. His experience, leadership, and championship pedigree make him the right person to lead our men’s basketball program into a new era. He understands what it takes to win at a high level and develop student-athletes both on and off the court.”

Across his head coaching career, Davis built a strong résumé with stops at UAB Blazers men’s basketball, Texas Southern Tigers men’s basketball, and Detroit Mercy Titans men’s basketball. He finished with a 412–360 overall record and led his teams to nine NCAA Tournament appearances, including multiple trips with both Indiana and Texas Southern.

He succeeded legendary head coach Bobby Knight at Indiana and continued the short-term success of the program. In 2002, Davis guided Indiana to a remarkable NCAA Tournament run that ended in a national championship game appearance while also securing a share of the Big Ten regular-season title.

Now, he looks to bring that same winning success to a Mississippi Valley State program that has struggled in recent seasons. They also lost a few key players, including star Michael James, who entered the transfer portal at the end of the season.
