The 6-foot-9 sophomore, who transferred in from Illinois last offseason, helped lead the Wolverines to a national title under coach Dusty May in April and shared Tuesday his intention to turn pro and remain in this year’s NBA Draft.
ESPN’s Jeff Borzello was the first to report the development, as Johnson Jr.’s agency team delivered the goods.
“Michigan forward Morez Johnson Jr., who started all 40 games en route to a national championship, is keeping his name in the NBA draft, his agents Austin Brown, Aaron Mintz and Max Saidman of CAA Basketball told ESPN. Projected top-20 pick after a strong Combine,” Borzello tweeted Tuesday.

Johnson Jr. took the opportunity to thank the Wolverines’ fanbase, as well as those closest to him who have followed his journey.
“Michigan means everything to me,” Johnson Jr. wrote. “You want to be somewhere that pushes you, supports you and helps you grow on and off the court. Michigan gave me all of that. From the fans to the alumni base, it’s a special place. From Day One, Coach May talked about development, accountability and competing for championships. I’m proud of everything we accomplished together. To my teammates, Coach May, the staff, academic support, teachers and friends — thank you.”
Johnson Jr. didn’t acknowledge his former coach, Brad Underwood, nor his former school, Illinois, in his farewell post. The reasons are unknown, but the well-documented messy exit from Champaign may have a lot to do with it.
“I’ll always be proud to be a Michigan Wolverine,” Johnson Jr. added. “I’m excited for the opportunity to chase my dream of playing in the NBA. Every step of this journey has helped me prepare for this moment, and I’m grateful for everyone who’s been a part of it. Go Blue forever!”

Johnson Jr. finished his Wolverines career averaging 13.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, winning in his home state of Illinois on several occasions last season. These included triumphs against the Illini, Northwestern Wildcats and Tennessee Volunteers along the way.

Johnson Jr. had until May 27 at 11:59 p.m. ET to make his decision, giving him about a week of breathing room.
The draft itself will be held on Tuesday, June 23, and Wednesday, June 24, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Now, all that’s left is to see what team takes a chance on the former Illinois high school prep phenom.
