Another member of the Michigan State women’s basketball team has made the cut for a national award.
Junior Grace VanSlooten was announced by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association as one of the top 10 candidates for the Cheryl Miller Award on Wednesday. The award annually goes to the top small forward in Division I women’s college basketball.
VanSlooten has been a key contributor for the No. 20-ranked Spartans, who own an 18-4 record and sit in fourth place in the Big Ten with an 8-3 record entering Sunday’s matchup against rival Michigan at Breslin Center. In her first season with the Spartans after transferring from Oregon, VanSlooten is averaging 14.4 points and shooting 52.9% from the field.
VanSlooten ranks fifth in the Big Ten in field goal percentage and is the second-leading scorer for the Spartans behind Julia Ayrault, who made the watch list for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award on Monday.
Other Big Ten players who made the top 10 for the Cheryl Miller Award are Indiana’s Yarden Garzon and Ohio State’s Cotie McMahon. The award features an element of fan voting that will take place starting Friday at hoophallawards.com.
