USA will have more to say at ITTF Mixed Team World Cup Chengdu 2024 presented by CHINA TELECOM, after finishing runner-up in Group 1 to secure its spot in Stage 2.
Facing a formidable opponent in the form of defending champion China, the odds were heavily stacked against USA heading into the match. However, there were bright glimpses of excellence from the latter team, with Sid Naresh becoming the first player to claim a game against China this week in a 2-1 defeat to Lin Shidong (9-11, 11-4, 11-2).
“It has been an amazing experience here in Chengdu. Lin Shidong’s level is unbelievable. I got pretty lucky in the first game to be able to win that. It’s an amazing experience. I’m very grateful to be able to play someone now at the highest level.” Sid Naresh
China would emerge from the match 8-1 victors, racing to top spot in the group, while USA’s group fate hinged on the result of India’s showdown with Australia.

With India coming out on top 8-6, the final group standings would play out in USA’s favour with the North American team claiming second place in Group 1, improving on its Stage 1 exit from last year’s ITTF Mixed Team World Cup 2023.
Over in Group 3, Korea Republic completed another resounding win to take top spot, outclassing Singapore 8-0, while Romania is also through to Stage 2 following an 8-4 victory over Chinese Taipei.
“Our expectation is that we want to enjoy it, so we try to play our best. If we also have a little bit of luck, I think we can make a good result. We have a good team, a young team also, so I’m very happy for my teammates, because all of us played really well. Last time we didn’t qualify, and we were very sad. Now we are very happy that this time we are qualified.” Bernadette Szocs
